A Great Vacation in Spain

Spain offers so much to travelers from all over the world. It encompasses a huge number of places, cultures, languages, and climates. Here are some ideas for getting the most out of your vacation in Spain.

Before setting off for Spain, you should decide whether you want to vacation in exciting urban areas, pastoral country setting, or historic villages. Spain also offers snowy mountains, beautiful beaches, priceless works of art, and a broad array of cultural offerings, so you have a broad range of choices.

Making Madrid your “home base” in Spain is a good choice. Madrid is geographically near the center of the country, and transportation to and from Madrid is excellent, whether by car, bus, or train.

Madrid

Madrid has the El Prado Museum, the Reina Sofa, and the Thyssen Museum, and the “old town” section of Madrid is very beautiful. The city also has a thriving night life, and even an Egyptian temple near the royal palace. You can take a number of day trips from Madrid, to Segovia, Toledo, Aranjuez, El Escorial, and Alcal de Henares. But it is hard to recommend any one choice, because all are good choices.

Other cities you might visit in Spain include Andalusia, holiday in Tenerife, Cadiz, Barcelona and Seville. Cadiz is more “Americanized” Spanish city, though it is an ancient city. Seville and Cordoba are very beautiful cities. Barcelona Hotels are amazing.

You should also try to take in Granada, particularly if your visit is in the springtime. All of Andalusia is beautiful, with rolling countryside, small towns, and villages. Spain even has a desert, the Almera, and the beach in Cabo de Gata has great scuba diving. The mountains between Granada and Almera provide a gorgeous landscape of mountains and small villages and towns.

If you go to Spain in August, you’ll have your pick of country fairs in small towns and villages. Larger cities like Almera and Mlaga also have fairs in August. Spain offers a number of university cities, such as Santiago de Compostela, Granada, and Salamanca. If you are a fan of Don Quixote, you should make sure and visit Castilla-La Mancha.

If you like island settings, you can visit Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, or Formentera in the Balearic Islands. Lanzarote has good weather year-round. Two outposts in Northern Africa, Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish cities that are also worth a trip if you can arrange it.

The Atlantic coast has Spain’s Basque country, plus Santander, Asturias, and Galicia and is filled with lovely country settings. The Spanish coast on the Mediterranean, near the border with France, boasts of beautiful beaches and great cities to visit, such as Barcelona, Valencia, and Alicante. In Tarifa, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean Sea, there is great windsurfing to watch or participate in.

The old cities of Len and Teruel in Castilla, and Extremadura are lovely old cities. If you have the chance to visit Portugal while you’re there, Lisbon is not that far from Madrid.

No matter where you go in Spain, you’re bound to find plenty to do and many beautiful cities, villages, towns and countryside locations to enjoy, with a large variety of cultural activities, and recreational activities to enjoy. And if you take part in local food specialties, you’ll enjoy your visit even more.
