South Africa may not be a top destination spot for world travelers, but maybe it should be. South Africa has attractions to offer unlike any other place in the world. Cultural, historical, educational and entertaining activities abound in South Africa. This country is melting pot of diversity and holds enough fascinating opportunities that any traveler will be hard-pressed to leave.
For big city lovers, the city of Johannesburg is teeming with energy. Theaters, museums, dance clubs and artist communes can be found on the city streets and offer a flair unmatched in other big cities around the world. Newtown is at the center of Johannesburg and has a spirit all it’s own, appealing to an artist’s heart. There is also a wide variety of culinary establishments to choose from.
The southern tip of South Africa is a place unlike any in the world. It is a place where mariners historically feared to journey- the place where two oceans collide. It is the site of more than 130 sunken sea-faring vessels. The chance to see such a spot as well as take in the rugged coastline has made the south shore a popular tourist destination. The coast is now home to many charming towns, boasting of local eateries, goods and crafts.
Cultural heritage and historic landmarks are also abundant, with something to see in every town. In 1972, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) created the World Heritage List in an attempt to identify and preserve the world’s heritage. South Africa has eight locations on the list including cultural and natural sites, one of which is a fossil site known as the Cradle of Mankind. It is the site where the one of the oldest and most complete hominid remains, some 3.3 million years old, were discovered in 1994.
